More about this artwork

This image you’ve provided features a stunningly intricate and detailed snowflake, capturing the delicate and unique beauty of winter's natural art. Wilson Bentley, popularly known as 'Snowflake' Bentley, was famous for his pioneering work in photomicrography, particularly his extensive and exquisite photography of snowflakes. Each image he created showcases the symmetrical, yet unique, patterns that snowflakes exhibit, a testament to both nature’s precision and Bentley’s skill in capturing such transient beauty. In this particular image, the snowflake appears to have a hexagonal structure which is common among snow crystals. Each arm of the crystal radiates from the center, featuring elaborate branching and feathery patterns that suggest it likely formed under cold and moist conditions, ideal for such intricate designs. The background is stark black, serving to highlight the brilliant white and delicate lines of the snowflake, emphasizing its exquisite and transient complexity.Bentley's work not only provides aesthetic pleasure but also contributes significantly to the scientific understanding of snow crystals and their various formations. His attention to detail and ability to capture these unique ice patterns has left a lasting legacy in both art and science.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
