More about this artwork

The image titled "Wilson Bentley's Snowflake 990" is a photograph captured by Wilson Bentley, who is famously known for his detailed and pioneering photography of snowflakes. The photograph features a highly intricate snowflake with a unique, symmetrical pattern, a result of its natural formation in the atmosphere. Each branch of the snowflake radiates beautifully from the center, exhibiting delicate, feather-like structures alongside more rigid, crystal-like formations. Bentley's work is particularly celebrated for showcasing the astounding variety and delicate details present in each snowflake, emphasizing that no two snowflakes are exactly alike. This image captures the transient and fragile beauty of a snowflake, preserving its form long after it has melted. Bentley's skill in photographically capturing these ice crystals has left a lasting impact on both art and science, contributing to our understanding of snowflake geometry and the conditions under which they form.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
