More about this artwork

The image you provided is a photomicrograph taken by Wilson Bentley, a pioneering photographer known for his detailed photographs of snowflakes. Bentley captured thousands of snowflakes in his lifetime, revealing the intricate and unique designs of each crystal. This particular photomicrograph is titled "Fernlike Stellar Snowflake No," and it showcases a snowflake with a stellar dendritic structure. This form is characterized by its star-like shape with fern-like arms that radiate outward. The complexity and delicate beauty of the snowflake's pattern are crisply rendered against a dark background, highlighting the symmetrical formations and the fine, feathery branches. The cracks and scratches visible on the image suggest that this is an old photograph, which adds a historical value to the image, encapsulating a moment of natural wonder frozen in time. Bentley's work is highly valued not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its contribution to the scientific understanding of snow crystal formation. Such images help meteorologists and crystallographers to study and understand the conditions under which various snowflake patterns are formed.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
