More about this artwork

This image is a photomicrograph of a snowflake captured by Wilson Bentley, who was famously known for his pioneering work in photographing snowflakes in great detail. The photograph showcases a stellar snowflake with an incredibly intricate and geometric design. The featured snowflake exhibits a six-sided symmetry characteristic of snow crystals with each arm of the flake bearing similar, elaborate patterning. The black and white contrast in this image emphasizes the delicate and detailed structure of the snowflake against a dark background. This distinct visibility is a testament to Bentley's innovative photographic techniques used to document these unique ice crystals. His work was crucial not only in terms of artistic beauty but also for scientific study, providing a better understanding of snowflake morphology and the physics of snow crystal formation. Each snowflake photograph by Bentley captures a fleeting natural masterpiece, forever preserved with his camera.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
