More about this artwork

The image you've provided represents one of Wilson Bentley's famous snowflake photographs, not a painting. Wilson Bentley, often known as "Snowflake" Bentley, was a pioneer in the field of photomicrography of snowflakes. He was the first person to capture a single snowflake’s image with a camera in 1885.The photograph you're referring to, described as Wilson Bentley’s Snowflake 332, showcases a detailed and magnified snowflake with a distinctly hexagonal structure, which is a characteristic pattern due to the molecular structure of ice. Each arm of the snowflake is beautifully embellished with intricate, feather-like patterns, showcasing nature's symmetry and intricacy. The contrast between the dark background and the brilliantly detailed snowflake emphasizes the delicate and unique design of each snowflake Bentley captured. His work has been crucial in studies of snow and ice crystals, as well as in appreciating the natural beauty of these ephemeral winter forms. Bentley’s photographs remain a significant combination of scientific endeavor and artistic pursuit, revealing the complexity and elegance found in the natural world.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
