More about this artwork

The painting titled "Wilson Bentley's Snowflake 349" represents a detailed depiction of a snowflake. The snowflake is symmetrical, with six primary arms that radiate from a central point, a common trait in snowflakes due to their hexagonal crystal structure. Each arm features intricate patterns that include variations in texture, geometric shapes, and what appear to be tiny indentations or markings. These details suggest the unique crystalline forms that snowflakes acquire as they develop in the atmosphere. The snowflake is rendered in a striking white against a dark background, enhancing its delicate and intricate design, highlighting the natural artistry found in frozen water. Wilson Bentley, the artist, was known for his work in photographing snowflakes and revealing the unique and complex structures of each crystal. This image reflects his passion and precision in capturing the ephemeral beauty of snowflakes.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
