More about this artwork

The painting titled "Seaside Dunes 1" by Kęstutis Jauniškis presents a serene seaside landscape, skillfully using a vibrant color palette and simple forms to create an evocative scene. The composition prominently features a foreground with sand dunes, rendered in warm shades of orange and ochre, which gracefully leads the viewer's eye towards the tranquil blue waters of the sea. Dominating the seascape are two sparse, long-stemmed plants with sparse foliage, depicted with reddish-orange leaves that provide a striking contrast to the pervading blues and yellows. In the mid-ground, a wide, calm body of water extends horizontally across the canvas, featuring two tiny sailboats that add an element of human activity to the natural setting. This band of water helps separate the sandy dunes from the distant shoreline, which is subtly detailed, suggesting a quiet separation from the busier world. On the right side of the painting, part of a structure is visible, perhaps the corner of a building, painted in rusty red and cream colors that echo the earthy tones found in the dunes. This architectural element adds a hint of human presence and anchors the composition, providing a contrast to the natural forms.Overall, Jauniškis uses texture and layering of paint to contribute to the painting’s dream-like quality, while his choice of a high horizon line gives a vastness to the sky, enhancing the overall sense of calm and expansiveness.

Kęstutis Jauniškis was born in Lithuania in 1961. He studied economy at Vilnius University and graduated in 1985 with a degree in MA. While studying economy, the artist also attended the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 1986. As an artist, Kestutis Jauniskis is interested in architectural forms and colour, and their relationship with their surroundings. In his paintings, reality is sometimes mixed with fantasy, which infuses a poetic touch into this rational world. It is in these scenes that Kestutis Jauniskis finds the shapes, colours, light and sky that evoke an emotional response in him, making him want to record them. The abstraction of his painting best represents the depth of feeling he has when viewing this real world that surrounds us, finding beauty in what others may consider ugly or mundane. At the same time, the artist likes to experiment with new abstract forms and objects. His work has been exhibited in Finland and Lithuania. He has participated in a group exhibition titled 'The Modern Lithuanian Art' at the Museum of Modern Art in Valencia, Spain.
