More about this artwork

The image you're looking at is a beautiful example of a snowflake as captured by Wilson Bentley, famously known as "The Snowflake Man." Bentley pioneered the photographic process of capturing snowflakes on film, revealing their intricate and unique geometric patterns. This particular snowflake exhibits a six-fold symmetry, which is typical in snowflakes due to the hexagonal crystal structure of ice. The design features detailed, mirror-image arms radiating from the center, each with their own distinct patterns that include both linear and dotted textures. The contrast in the image, with the snowflake sharply detailed against a dark background, enhances the visibility of these delicate intricacies.Wilson Bentley's work has been critical in helping scientists and the general public understand more about snow crystals and their diverse structures. Each snowflake Bentley photographed was a testament to both his patience and his fascination with these tiny ice crystals, highlighting the concept that no two snowflakes are exactly alike. His careful and skilled work turns what is typically a small, ephemeral piece of nature into a perpetual, mesmerizing art form.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
