More about this artwork

The image you’ve shared appears to be a detailed photograph of a snowflake, titled "Wilson Bentley's Snowflake 10" by Wilson Bentley. This portrayal captures the exquisite intricacy and symmetrical beauty of a single snowflake. Each arm of the snowflake displays a unique pattern of geometric shapes and lines, contributing to an overall hexagonal form, which is typical in snowflake structures due to the way water molecules bond in ice.Wilson Bentley, often known as "Snowflake" Bentley, was renowned for his pioneering photographic techniques in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which allowed him to capture the delicate structures of snowflakes in great detail before they melted. His work was crucial in proving that no two snowflakes are alike, with each having its unique pattern. The background of the image is dark, enhancing the translucent and crystalline qualities of the snowflake and bringing every minute detail into stark relief. This image not only serves as a scientific record of snowflake structures but also as an artistic appreciation of natural geometric artistry.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
