More about this artwork

The image you've shared showcases a beautiful snowflake with a highly intricate design that is captured against a stark black background, which really makes the delicate details of the snowflake stand out. This isn't a painting, but rather a photograph taken by Wilson Bentley, who was famously known as "Snowflake" Bentley. He was one of the first to photograph snowflakes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and developed innovative photographic techniques to capture the unique crystalline structures of each snowflake he observed.Bentley's work reveals the symmetrical, yet individually unique shapes of snowflakes, emphasizing the natural art found in the microscopic world. Each branch and segment of the snowflake displays elaborate patterns that manifest nature’s affinity for fractals—shapes that repeat progressively smaller versions of themselves, creating a complex yet harmonious geometry. This particular image captures a snowflake with six main branches, each sprouting secondary branches that further divide into intricate patterns of frosty spires and nodes, creating a mesmerizing star-like configuration.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
