More about this artwork

This is a photomicrograph by Wilson Bentley, famously known as "Snowflake" Bentley, who was one of the first to extensively photograph snowflakes in detail. The image you've provided captures a singular snowflake with exquisite detail, showcasing the snowflake's intricate and symmetrical structure. This particular photograph emphasizes the stellar form of the snowflake, characterized by its star-like shape with radiating arms. Each arm of the snowflake appears uniquely adorned with smaller branching patterns, displaying the natural phenomenon of sublimation which Bentley so famously documented. The dark background in the image helps to enhance the almost metallic sheen of the ice crystals, emphasizing the delicate, lace-like details of the snowflake's design. Bentley's work was pioneering not just in its photographic technique but also in its contribution to the scientific understanding of snow crystals and their diverse structures.Bentley's photographs remain a blend of art and science, illustrating the stunning complexity and natural artistry found in elements of nature as minute as snowflakes. His work provides a visual record of the uniqueness of each snowflake, supporting the adage that no two snowflakes are exactly alike.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
