More about this artwork

This image, titled "Wilson Bentley's Snowflake 920," is a striking representation of a singular snowflake, magnified to reveal its intricate and symmetrical structure. Renowned for his pioneering work in photographing snowflakes, Wilson Bentley captured thousands of snowflakes in his lifetime, revealing the unique geometrical patterns of each one.The snowflake in this image displays a classic six-sided crystal structure, common among snowflakes but with subtle variations that make each one uniquely beautiful. The arms of the snowflake radiate out from a central hexagonal core, each branch detailed with secondary and tertiary branches that mimic the primary arm's shape, producing a delicate and finely detailed fractal pattern. The contrast between the snowflake's stark white intricacies and the deep, dark background accentuates the crystal's purity and fragility, characteristics that Bentley was so adept at documenting. This image not only highlights Bentley's skill as a photographer but also his passion for showcasing the natural artistry of winter's ephemeral ice crystals. The photograph invites viewers to appreciate the fleeting beauty of snowflakes, which Bentley helped make a lasting subject of fascination and study.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
