More about this artwork

This image presents a striking artwork depicting a snowflake, titled "Wilson Bentley's Snowflake 234" and attributed to the artist Wilson Bentley, known for his pioneering work in photographing snowflakes. The artwork here shows a hexagonal snowflake design that emphasizes symmetry and geometry, common in natural snowflake formations. The snowflake is articulated with clear, linear patterns and finer, intricate detailing within the broader hexagonal structure, suggesting the unique crystalline structure of snowflakes that Bentley famously captured and studied. The contrast between the dark background and the white lines of the snowflake enhances the visibility and sharpness of the design, providing a dramatic and clean aesthetic.Wilson Bentley's work often highlighted the idea that no two snowflakes are exactly alike, capturing the fleeting beauty and complexity of snow through his photography. This representation stays true to his legacy by showcasing the delicate and transient nature of snowflakes through a visually arresting artistic interpretation.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
