More about this artwork

This image, titled "Wilson Bentley's Snowflake 951," showcases a single snowflake photographed by Wilson Bentley. Bentley was renowned for his pioneering work in photomicrography of snowflakes and capturing their intricate structures. The snowflake in the image presents an exquisite hexagonal form, characteristic of snow crystals, but each one with its own unique pattern. The central part of the snowflake features a complex, symmetrical geometrical pattern, which is surrounded by a somewhat rougher and less uniform outer structure composed of smaller ice formations and branches. The crystalline details are highlighted by the contrast against the dark background, emphasizing the snowflake's delicate, lace-like architecture. Bentley's work was crucial in helping people appreciate the natural art and science behind snow crystals, emphasizing that no two snowflakes are alike, each with its unique design. His meticulous documentation of these ice crystals has provided valuable insights into the conditions under which they form and the natural beauty inherent in their ephemeral shapes.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
