More about this artwork

The image you've provided depicts a snowflake with captivating symmetry and intricate details, characteristic of Wilson Bentley's photography work rather than a painting. Bentley, who was fondly known as "Snowflake Bentley," became famous for his pioneering work in photomicrography, capturing detailed photographs of individual snowflakes. In this photograph, titled "Snowflake," we see the stunning architectural beauty of a single snow crystal. The snowflake exhibits a classic hexagonal shape, but each arm of the hexagon is uniquely embellished with elaborate branching and patterned designs. These designs echo natural themes seen often in snow crystals, such as needle-like projections and feathery, leaf-like structures. The contrast between the crisp, white lines of the snowflake and the deep, dark background enhances the crystal's delicate details. This technique was key in Bentley’s work to emphasize the unique design of each snowflake, highlighting the notion that no two snowflakes are alike.Bentley's photography, which started in the late 19th century, opened up a whole new world of scientific study and artistic appreciation for snow crystals, marrying the intricate beauty of nature with the burgeoning field of photographic art.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
