More about this artwork

This image captures the detailed and intricate beauty of a snowflake, as photographed by Wilson Bentley, who was known for his pioneering work in photomicrography of snowflakes. The snowflake shown in the picture features a hexagonal structure, a common form, but with unique, elaborate patterns within each of its six symmetrical arms. The central part of the snowflake displays a star-shaped pattern, lending a dynamic contrast to the more linear arms extending outward. These arms are highlighted by their geometric clarity, with edges that suggest crystal growth and delicate, almost lace-like detailing. The black background enhances the stark white of the snowflake, making its complex and delicate structure stand out distinctly.Wilson Bentley's work in capturing such ephemeral natural forms has been valuable not only for its artistic beauty but also for contributing to the scientific understanding of snow crystal formation and variability. Each snowflake Bentley photographed revealed that no two snowflakes are exactly alike, each one a small marvel of natural art and symmetry.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
