More about this artwork

This image depicts a highly detailed and magnificently structured snowflake, captured or created by Wilson Bentley. Bentley, famously known as "Snowflake Bentley," was not a painter but a photographer renowned for his pioneering work in photographing snowflakes up close. Through his photography, he was able to reveal the intricate and unique designs of individual snowflakes, which prior to his work were not appreciated in such detail. The snowflake in the image exhibits a stellar dendrite shape, characterized by its intricate, symmetrical branching arms. These arms extend outwards from a central hexagonal core, a common structural feature seen in snowflakes due to the molecular arrangement of ice. The clarity and precision of this image allow us to see the detailed patterns, which include smaller hexagonal shapes and designs within each arm, showcasing the natural fractal-like repetition. The dark background in the image contrasts sharply with the translucent and delicate form of the snowflake, making its details more pronounced and visually striking. This photographic technique not only emphasizes the beauty and symmetry of the snowflake but also illustrates Bentley’s skill in capturing such ephemeral natural forms before they melted away.Overall, the image titled "Snowflake" by Wilson Bentley is not only a showcase of his technical ability to capture snowflakes with such clarity but also an artistic celebration of the natural wonder of snow crystals. Each snowflake Bentley captured is a reminder of the unique, fleeting artistry found in nature.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
