More about this artwork

The image titled "Snowflake" by Wilson Bentley showcases a beautifully intricate and symmetrical snowflake captured in high detail. Unlike a painting, this is actually a photograph taken by Bentley, who was known as one of the first known photographers of snowflakes. He developed a technique using a microscope attached to a camera, which enabled him to capture detailed images of individual snowflakes in all their unique glory. The snowflake in the image displays a striking hexagonal symmetry, a common attribute of snowflakes due to the way water molecules bond as they freeze. This particular snowflake features complex patterning that includes broad arms extending outward, each mirroring the others in shape and design. There are detailed, geometric patterns within each arm, and the image's enhanced contrast along with the monochrome color enhances these delicate details against a dark background. This provides a stellar example of nature's meticulous artistry and Bentley’s skill in capturing such fleeting beauty.

Dubbed as “Snowflake”, Wilson Alwyn Bentley (1865-1931) was a pioneer in snowflake photomicrography. As a child he was fascinated by the natural world, and by the age of 19 he became the first to successfully capture a snowflake photograph with the help of a feather, a microscope and a camera. Bentley photographed thousands of individual snow crystals during his career, some of which we are showcasing in this collection.
