More about this artwork

"Rose of Heaven" from The Flower Book by Edward Burne-Jones is a delicate and ethereal work that captures a sense of celestial beauty through its imagery and composition. The painting is set within a circular frame, and it predominantly features an image of a nude woman standing atop a path of lilies that diagonally cuts across a pool of deep blue water studded with smaller white flowers. The woman, who is the centerpiece of this artwork, is depicted with long flowing hair that seems to blend seamlessly with the air and water surrounding her. She holds a bright, blue orb in her right hand—perhaps a symbolical representation of the moon or a celestial object, emphasizing her connection to heavenly elements. The flowers she is standing on might be interpreted as water lilies, a common symbol of purity, peace, and rebirth. Her pose and the surrounding elements invoke a sense of tranquility and grace, which is characteristic of Burne-Jones’s approach to art, heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite style, focusing on beauty, intricate detail, and vivid coloration within a mythological or dream-like setting. The overall composition and the elements chosen by Burne-Jones, such as the celestial symbols and the serene posture of the woman, create a mystical atmosphere, encouraging the viewer to contemplate the divine and otherworldly aspects of nature and femininity.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
