More about this artwork

The painting titled "Black Archangel From The Flower Book" by Edward Burne-Jones features a somber yet striking depiction of an archangel. The style is typical of Burne-Jones, marked by his romantic, Pre-Raphaelite touch, which often infused his artwork with a blend of mysticism and medieval elements. The figure of the archangel is robust, cloaked in a dark, flowing robe that falls heavily around him. His posture is seated, with a stateliness conferred by his broad shoulders and somewhat stern facial expression. The archangel holds a long spear that anchors the composition, drawing the viewer's eye towards his hand and the length of the shaft. His wings, appearing both powerful and delicate, are spread out behind him, enveloping his figure in a protective yet imposing manner. The background is a blend of fiery red and subdued green tones, perhaps emblematic of some divine or apocalyptic landscape, evoking a sense of tension and ominous beauty. The circular format of the painting further focuses the viewer's attention on the figure of the archangel, almost as if we're looking through a portal or window into another realm. The use of color, from the dark tones of the archangel's attire to the contrasting fiery background, enhances the mystical and somewhat foreboding atmosphere of the artwork.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
