More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Burne-Jones titled "Design For Stained Glass, Southeast Window Nave, Paisley Abbey, Scotland" is a beautiful example of a design intended for stained glass windows. The illustration showcases three separate panels, each embedded within a pointed Gothic arch typical of stained glass window design. In the left panel, you can see a scene with beautifully detailed figures that appear to be involved in some sort of narrative, possibly biblical, given the traditional themes often used in church windows. There is a sense of interaction among the characters that suggests a storytelling element. The middle panel features a pastoral scene with figures that look like family or community members engaged in what appears to be a daily life activity. The figures are seated and interacting pleasantly, surrounded by lush foliate designs that are characteristic of Burne-Jones' work. The right panel depicts an indoor scene, perhaps a sanctified setting where two figures are interacting. One seems to be either engaged in reading or playing a musical instrument, while the other listens attentively. The environment is calm and serene, with an enclosed feeling conveyed by the surrounding architectural elements. The entire composition is unified by a decorative pattern of leaves and vines that run through all the panels, typical of the intricate backgrounds in stained glass designs of this period.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
