More about this artwork

"Grave of the Sea" by Edward Burne-Jones is a captivating circular painting that features a dreamlike and mystical depiction connected with maritime themes. The painting shows two figures that evoke a sense of being allegorical representations rather than specific characters. These figures are depicted in a dynamic and somewhat enigmatic pose within a stylized sea environment. The figure on the left appears to be diving or floating downwards, with a sorrowful or serene expression, gesturing towards the tranquility or resignation of meeting the sea as a grave. The figure's hair and body are rendered with flowing lines, suggesting movement through water. The other figure on the right is portrayed in a reclined position, almost appearing to blend with the sea currents, reinforcing the theme of submersion and eternal rest in the aquatic depths. The choice of colors further accentuates the underwater atmosphere, with shades of blue dominating, punctuated by the creamy white and golden hues that highlight the figures and give life to the sea’s texture. The surrounding border of the circle adds a definitive boundary to the scene, focusing the viewer's attention inward and enhancing the pictorial depth.Overall, Burne-Jones's "Grave of the Sea" illustrates an ethereal and poetic vision of the ocean as a final resting place, imbued with beauty and melancholy. It’s a part of his larger body of work which often explores themes of myth, legend, and the metaphysical through rich, emotive imagery.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
