More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Burne-Jones, titled "Fire Tree From The Flower Book," presents an intriguing scene framed within a circular border. The composition focuses on a large tree, which stands as the central element. The tree's foliage is depicted with dynamic, flame-like strokes in varying shades of blue, lending it a vibrant and almost mystic presence that contrasts with the grounded and earthier tones of the background. To the left, under the tree, there is a figure dressed in a deep blue, almost blending with the shadowy hues of the tree. The person appears to be crouching or kneeling on the ground, portrayed in a reflective or somber posture, perhaps suggesting contemplation or a deep connection with nature. The background landscape comprises a simple, pastoral scene with rolling hills and a clear sky, subtly divided by what could be a wall or a fence, adding a sense of depth and openness. A small flock of white sheep grazes tranquilly, enhancing the peaceful yet somewhat melancholic atmosphere of the scene.Overall, the painting may evoke themes of nature, reflection, and perhaps an underlying narrative or symbol linked to the tree’s unusual depiction, possibly alluding to elements of fire and life within the natural environment. The use of a circular composition might suggest a focused, almost vignette-like view into this moment, creating an intimate connection with the viewer.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
