More about this artwork

"Wake, Dearest" from "The Flower Book" by Edward Burne-Jones is a captivating circular painting that showcases the artist's distinctive Pre-Raphaelite style, rich in symbolic and ornate detailing. In this ethereal piece, a scene is set within a lush, flower-speckled backdrop encased in a richly decorative border. The central figures prominently featured are a beautiful, sleeping woman and a majestic, winged angel. The woman lies reclined, seemingly in a deep, peaceful slumber upon a blue bed that merges smoothly with her flowing gown, both intricately detailed with floral embellishments that echo the surrounding foliage. The angel, cloaked in a long, flowing dark garment that reflects a sense of solemnity and grace, gently leans over her. The gesture could be interpreted as one of awakening or comforting. It exudes a tender, protective quality, suggesting a moment of divine intervention or guardianship. The overall composition, coupled with its vibrant yet soft color palette, evokes a dream-like atmosphere, inviting the viewer to ponder the narrative—whether it's merely a depiction of a serene moment or an allegorical representation involving themes of protection, awakening, or possibly an ethereal visitation.Burne-Jones's use of circular format here amplifies the intimate and encapsulated nature of the scene, focusing the viewer’s attention on the interaction between the celestial being and the mortal, and weaving a story that feels both timeless and mystical.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
