More about this artwork

This painting, "The Annunciation" by Edward Burne-Jones, is a visually rich and symbolic work depicting the biblical story where the Angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will bear the son of God. The painting is notable for its gothic revival style, characterized by the pointed arch at the top and the detailed, decorative elements.Burne-Jones presents a scene filled with intricate patterns and vibrant colors that enhance the spiritual and mystical feeling of the moment. The angel Gabriel is to the left, draped in a robe of intricate patterns and warm colors, with wings that blend softly into his attire. He holds a lily, a symbol of purity, in his left hand, which reinforces the sanctity of the message he’s delivering. The Virgin Mary sits on the right, depicted with a humble and contemplative expression. Her posture and placement lower in the frame might suggest her initial trepidation at the angel's greeting. She is surrounded by an abundance of flowers and foliage, which could symbolize fertility or the blossoming of her new role as the mother of Jesus. The background is richly decorated with floral motifs, adding a layer of texture and depth to the scene, and enhancing its sacred atmosphere. Overall, Edward Burne-Jones's use of color, symbolic elements, and meticulous detail create a profound depiction of this significant biblical event.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
