More about this artwork

This painting titled "The Annunciation" by Edward Burne-Jones is a captivating example of the Pre-Raphaelite style, characterized by its rich colors, intricate detail, and themes drawn from religious and mythological narratives. The artwork depicts the scene from the Bible where the Angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will be the mother of Jesus Christ. In this rendition, the setting is almost otherworldly, heavily adorned with floral motifs that fill the background, suggesting a divine and pure atmosphere. The angel Gabriel is depicted on the left, draped in a robe of deep reds adorned with golden designs, reflecting his celestial nature and importance. His wings are partially visible, adding to his ethereal appearance. Gabriel holds a scroll, a common attribute in depictions of the Annunciation, symbolizing the message he brings from God.Mary is shown on the right, seated and turned towards Gabriel, portraying a posture of attentiveness and contemplation. Her expression is one of humility and introspection, capturing her acceptance and the weight of the revelation she receives. Mary's clothing is modest and rendered in tones that contrast with the vibrant colors surrounding her, highlighting her purity and central role in the narrative. The use of the arched, pointed trefoil top of the painting enhances its medieval quality, reminiscent of a stained glass window, reinforcing the sacred nature of the event depicted.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
