More about this artwork

This painting titled "Cupid And Psyche - Palace Green Murals - Psyche Receiving The Casket From Proserpine" is by Edward Burne-Jones, a prominent Pre-Raphaelite artist known for his mythological and medieval-inspired themes. The artwork strikingly captures a moment from the classical myth of Cupid and Psyche, showcasing several elements and characters from the story. In the painting's foreground, Psyche is depicted in a serene, almost pensive pose, clothed in a flowing white garment. She holds a casket, which according to the myth, contains a portion of Proserpine’s beauty, destined for Venus. This was one of the tasks set by Venus in an attempt to hinder Psyche from reuniting with Cupid.Next to Psyche, embracing her, is Cupid himself, identifiable by his large, powerful wings and the noticeable halo around his head — a typical depiction of divine or quasi-divine figures in art. His presence conveys comfort and support as he leans in affectionately toward Psyche. The background features a dramatic, rugged landscape with a dark, tumultuous sea, symbolizing the trials and tribulations that the lovers must endure. A boat, possibly representing Charon's ferry from Greek mythology, which carries souls across the rivers Styx and Acheron in the underworld, is shown in the middle of the water.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
