More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Burne-Jones, titled "Deer," is a delicate and symbolic work typical of the artist's style, which is often associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement and its revival of medieval motifs and techniques. The artwork depicts a serene and idyllic landscape, featuring a series of deer symmetrically arranged around a central, oversized red fruit cup, suggesting an otherworldly or mythical scene. The composition is highly structured and symmetrical. A total of eight deer, with their beautifully rendered coats, are shown in various stances—some standing and gazing outward, others bowing their heads to drink from a stream that flows gracefully across the foreground. The stream acts as a reflective surface, enhancing the dreamlike quality of the scene. In the center of the composition, the large fruit cup, which resembles a chalice, serves as a focal point. It is ornately decorated and holds what appears to be red apples, symbolizing abundance or perhaps a form of temptation or sacrament, drawing on symbolic meanings often found in mythological or biblical narratives.Behind the deer and the chalice, there is lush vegetation, including a prominent tree filled with rounded, dense foliage, and framed by other greenery and floral elements.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
