More about this artwork

"Venus' Looking Glass" from "The Flower Book" by Edward Burne-Jones is a beautifully detailed illustration encapsulating a dreamlike and mythological quality. This painting shows a woman, likely embodying Venus, seated by the water's edge in a tranquil, moonlit landscape. Her back is turned to the viewer, and she gazes contemplatively at the moon or a glowing celestial body in the sky, which may symbolize her own looking glass reflecting her eternal beauty and charm. The artwork, circular in format, effectively draws the eye inward, focusing our attention on Venus and the serene natural environment around her. The landscape is rendered in soft, muted tones, and the moon casts a silver, reflective light over the scene, enhancing the mystical and tranquil mood. The figure's gentle posture and the lyrical flow of her hair and garment harmonize with the soft ripples of the water and the delicate outlines of the surrounding foliage.Symbolically, the painting might explore themes of reflection, beauty, and nature's allure, all elements associated with the goddess Venus. The inclusion of the moon, often linked to femininity and intuition, complements Venus' divine characteristics, adding layers of meaning to this enigmatic piece. The circle itself reinforces the notion of completeness and perfection, elements endlessly associated with Venus.Burne-Jones, known for his involvement in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, often created works rich in symbolism and equipped with an ethereal, otherworldly quality.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
