More about this artwork

On display is the captivating lithograph by David Roberts, titled "Thebes. Great Hall at Karnak. Nov. 28, 1838." Created between 1846 and 1849, this artwork vividly depicts the grandeur of the Great Hall in the Temple of Karnak, located in Thebes, modern-day Luxor, Egypt. Karnak, renowned for its rich tapestry of temples, chapels, and pylons, represents a significant archaeological and ceremonial site in ancient Egypt. In Roberts's composition, the viewer is drawn into a deep perspective framed by towering columns adorned with hieroglyphic inscriptions and intricate motifs, reflecting the grandiose architectural achievements of the ancient Egyptians. The columns, massive and vividly colored, rise dramatically to support the weighty structure, their capitals decorated with the open papyrus motifs, emblematic of Egyptian art.The scene is not just an architectural study but also a slice of daily life from the 1830s. In the foreground, local figures are portrayed resting and socializing in the cool shades of the temple, alongside camels — suggesting the temple’s role as a serene sanctuary amidst the bustling world outside. This human element adds a touch of immediacy and intimacy, bridging the centuries of history separating the viewer from the depicted era.David Roberts’s work is not merely an artistic rendering; it's a historical document capturing the sublime beauty and scale of Egypt's ancient ruins. This lithograph is a fine example of Roberts’s attention to detail and his commitment to portraying his subjects with accuracy and deep respect.Roberts’s "Thebes.

David Roberts (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
