More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Burne-Jones, titled "Cupid Flying Away From Psyche," is a visually striking work that captures a moment of dramatic emotion and mythological narrative. The image is vertical and elongated, dominated by the figure of Cupid, who is depicted in motion, flying upwards.Cupid, the god of love, is rendered with large, expansive wings that fill much of the frame, suggesting power and swift movement. These wings are detailed and textural, shimmering with tones of gold and brown, contrasting beautifully against the dark, star-studded sky. The background is a deep, rich blue, speckled with small stars, which adds a celestial and infinite feeling to the scene. The figure of Cupid is shown from the back, his body draped in a flowing garment that catches the wind. His posture and the angle of his ascent suggest urgency and perhaps a hint of sorrow, aligning with the mythological story of Cupid and Psyche, where Cupid is forced to leave Psyche due to various trials and complications in their love story.Notably, Edward Burne-Jones was known for his involvement with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and this painting showcases typical elements of the movement: attention to detail, vibrant color, and a strong emphasis on narrative and emotion. The atmospheric quality of the painting and the ethereal depiction of light serve to enhance the poignant and mystical quality of the story being told.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
