More about this artwork

Gerda Wegener's painting "Sur talons rouges pl 06" (1929), offers a fascinating glimpse into her unique artistic style, characterized by a blend of Art Deco and elements of magical realism. The scene unfolds with three key figures entwined in a mysterious and whimsical interaction. The central character, a witch-like figure with a long, pointed hat and flowing silver hair, extends her hand to draw attention to the object at the center of their attention. To her right, a man in elaborate, period-specific attire is caught in a mid-bow posture, engaging with her perhaps in a scenario of supplication or transaction.Opposite him, another character, dressed in a vibrant teal outfit complete with golden embellishments and a matching hat, holds onto the same object, suggesting a moment of exchange or significant interaction. Each character is elegantly posed against a softly arched backdrop that gives an almost theatrical frame to this enigmatic gathering. The use of subtle colors and detailed textures—especially noticeable in the attire and accessories—reflects Wegener’s prowess in creating vivid, narrative-rich tableaus. The presence of the striking red heels on all three characters not only unifies them but also adds a layer of intrigue and possibly symbolic meaning to the composition."Sur talons rouges pl 06" invites viewers to delve into a narrative that seems to hover tantalizingly between the realms of the everyday and the fantastical.

Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (15 March 1886 – 28 July 1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter. Wegener is known for her fashion illustrations and later her paintings that pushed the boundaries of her time concerning gender and love. These works were classified as lesbian erotica at times and many were inspired by her partner, the transgender woman Lili Elbe. Wegener employed these works in the styles of Art Nouveau and later Art Deco.
