More about this artwork

"Sur talons rouges pl 05" (1929) by Gerda Wegener is a captivating and whimsical painting that instantly draws viewers into an enigmatic and colorful world. In this illustration, we observe a scene that feels drawn from a vibrant, surrealist carnival. The central figure, a pale-skinned, elegantly poised woman adorned in a flowing, white gown embellished with roses, is seated atop a large, ornate patterned ball, holding a delicate feather fan in one hand. Her lofty position and serene expression give her an air of regality and detachment, as though she is overseeing the scene rather than participating in it.To the left, a figure in a darker, polka-dotted dress, possibly representing an artist, leans towards the seated woman, a palette of vivid colors at the ready. This juxtaposition seems to suggest that the seated woman herself might be a canvas, an artistic creation being brought to life by the colorful realities around her.Adding to the surreal quality of the scene are various fantastical elements such as a large, exotic bird with a bright orange plumage by her side, a humanoid figure with elements resembling a toy, and a creature that combines features of a bird and a mammal. Each of these characters contributes to the dreamlike, almost theatrical atmosphere of the painting.Gerda Wegener's artistry in "Sur talons rouges pl 05" invites deep contemplation about beauty, creation, and the role of the observer versus the participant in the realms of art.

Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (15 March 1886 – 28 July 1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter. Wegener is known for her fashion illustrations and later her paintings that pushed the boundaries of her time concerning gender and love. These works were classified as lesbian erotica at times and many were inspired by her partner, the transgender woman Lili Elbe. Wegener employed these works in the styles of Art Nouveau and later Art Deco.
