More about this artwork

Gerda Wegener's 1933 painting, "Marokkansk par" (Moroccan Couple), is a captivating representation of cultural attire and intimacy. This beautiful watercolor displays a man and a woman seated together in a relaxed, intimate posture, surrounded by an evocatively sketched Moroccan landscape. The man, depicted with a focused, serene expression, wears traditional Moroccan attire including a turban and a flowing robe. The woman, adorned with detailed jewelry and a vibrant dress, casts a gentle gaze downward, contributing to the serene and thoughtful ambiance of the scene.Wegener's use of watercolor gives the painting a soft, ethereal quality, with translucent washes of color that suggest the warmth and light of a Moroccan day. The artist's skill in capturing both the intricate patterns of the clothing and the subtle interplay of colors highlights her keen eye for detail and her appreciation for the culture she portrays. This painting not only reflects Wegener's artistry but also her fascination with different cultures and lifestyles, a central theme throughout her body of work.

Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (15 March 1886 – 28 July 1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter. Wegener is known for her fashion illustrations and later her paintings that pushed the boundaries of her time concerning gender and love. These works were classified as lesbian erotica at times and many were inspired by her partner, the transgender woman Lili Elbe. Wegener employed these works in the styles of Art Nouveau and later Art Deco.
