More about this artwork

Welcome to a captivating moment captured in art by Gerda Wegener, reflecting both charm and narrative depth in "Queen of Hearts – Portrait of Lili." This painting mesmerizes viewers with its vibrant portrayal of Lili Elbe, one of the early recipients of gender reassignment surgery and Wegener’s muse and wife. Set against the backdrop of a richly detailed room, Lili is seen seated at a table strewn with playing cards, a visible emblem of games of chance and symbols of fate.Clad in a radiant pink dress, Lili's gaze is toward the viewer, as she gently holds a card displaying the queen of hearts, mirroring perhaps her own transformation and journey. Her expression mixes contemplation with a hint of melancholy, drawing the viewer into her psychological space and the era’s complexities surrounding identity. The setting includes everyday objects such as a newspaper, playing cards, and a half-empty glass of wine, suggesting a scene paused in time.Gerda Wegener’s brushwork brings Lili to life with delicate yet expressive lines, highlighting the interplay of light and shadow, and the vivid, yet soothing color palette evokes Lili's internal world and external presentation. This painting not only showcases the artistry and empathy of Wegener but also echoes a poignant narrative of love, identity, and the courage to embrace one’s true self amidst societal boundaries.

Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (15 March 1886 – 28 July 1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter. Wegener is known for her fashion illustrations and later her paintings that pushed the boundaries of her time concerning gender and love. These works were classified as lesbian erotica at times and many were inspired by her partner, the transgender woman Lili Elbe. Wegener employed these works in the styles of Art Nouveau and later Art Deco.
