More about this artwork

Immerse yourself in the dramatic and enchanting world of Gerda Wegener's artwork, "Sur talons rouges pl 08". Created in 1929, this striking painting captures the essence of whimsical adventure intertwined with aristocratic flair. The painting portrays an immediately captivating scene of an equestrian jump. A female rider, adorned in a lavish 18th-century riding costume complete with a flowing black cape and an elaborately curled white wig, is depicted in mid-leap over a rustic wooden bridge. Her poised and serene expression contrasts dynamically with the action of the scene. The horse, a beautifully detailed white steed with elegant grey shading, carries her effortlessly, embodying grace and power.Behind her, adding depth and narrative intrigue, a male rider in a bright red coat follows, creating a striking visual contrast. His focused gaze towards the female protagonist and his swift motion add layers of mystery and potential narrative to the artwork. The soft, muted background of rolling hills and whimsical clouds gives the painting a dreamlike quality, inviting the viewer to lose themselves in a moment suspended between reality and fantasy.Gerda Wegener's masterful use of color and detail makes "Sur talons rouges pl 08" not merely a painting but a portal into a captivating tale of grace, agility, and high society. This piece exemplifies Wegener's unique ability to blend classical influences with her own modernist twist, making it a timeless piece for any art enthusiast to cherish.

Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (15 March 1886 – 28 July 1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter. Wegener is known for her fashion illustrations and later her paintings that pushed the boundaries of her time concerning gender and love. These works were classified as lesbian erotica at times and many were inspired by her partner, the transgender woman Lili Elbe. Wegener employed these works in the styles of Art Nouveau and later Art Deco.
