More about this artwork

Dive into the captivating world of Gerda Wegener with the illustrious artwork titled "Sur talons rouges pl 04" from 1929. This enchanting piece showcases Wegener’s signature style, blending Art Deco influences with a whimsical, almost surreal quality. The painting depicts a graceful, serpentine canal scene infused with romance and music. At the center, two figures intertwine in an elegant dance, adorned in chequered and ornamental costumes that echo the textures and patterns typical of the Art Deco era. Their faces are partially masked, adding to the mystique and allure of the scene. One of the figures plays a guitar, serenading the other and enhancing the intimate atmosphere. Surrounding them, oversized swan figures curve gracefully into the composition, their shapes merging fluidly with the watery landscape. They appear almost as guardians or participants in this mysterious rite, with their presence emphasizing the dreamlike quality of the tableau.Above, the title "Les sérénades d'amour voguaient sur les canaux" suggests a narrative of love serenades flowing along the canals, perhaps hinting at the Venice canals known for such romantic encounters.Wegener’s artistry in "Sur talons rouges pl 04" captures a moment frozen in time—a vivid dance of love, music, and art, all intertwined in an ethereal setting that transcends the ordinary and invites viewers to explore the depths of their imaginations.

Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (15 March 1886 – 28 July 1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter. Wegener is known for her fashion illustrations and later her paintings that pushed the boundaries of her time concerning gender and love. These works were classified as lesbian erotica at times and many were inspired by her partner, the transgender woman Lili Elbe. Wegener employed these works in the styles of Art Nouveau and later Art Deco.
