More about this artwork

Gerda Wegener's "Madonna with Child, Surrounded by Musical Angels," painted in 1935, depicts a serene and tender portrayal of the Madonna gently holding the Christ Child, both radiating warmth and affection. The composition centers around the Madonna and Child enveloped by four angels, each contributing to an atmosphere of divine music and harmony. In the artwork, the Virgin Mary is depicted with a softly modeled face, exuding maternal grace and calm, her golden halo shimmering behind her. The Child, cheek pressed against his mother, shares her tranquil demeanor, adding to the painting's gentle aura.Surrounding them, four angels each play a different musical instrument – a violin, a lute, and delicately clasp flowers, enhancing the scene's celestial and mystical quality. Wegener's use of soft pastel tones and smooth lines infuses the painting with a dreamlike, ethereal quality, while the background, a subtle blend of landscape and architectural elements, provides a peaceful backdrop that focuses attention on the central figures.

Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (15 March 1886 – 28 July 1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter. Wegener is known for her fashion illustrations and later her paintings that pushed the boundaries of her time concerning gender and love. These works were classified as lesbian erotica at times and many were inspired by her partner, the transgender woman Lili Elbe. Wegener employed these works in the styles of Art Nouveau and later Art Deco.
