More about this artwork

"Sur talons rouges pl 11" (1929) by Gerda Wegener presents a captivating tableau that merges theatricality with the delicacy of fine art. This painting portrays a dramatic scene featuring two main figures set against an opulently decorated background that suggests a room of high social standing. The central character, a woman, stands enwrapped in a voluminous red cloak, her posture bold and her bearing defiant. She is portrayed nude, climbing out of her garment with a mischievous and confident expression, highlighted by deep red heels that match her cloak. Her look is completed with an elaborate feathered headpiece, adding to the theatrical and somewhat burlesque vibe of the scene. At her feet, a second figure - an older man - exhibits a starkly contrasting demeanor. He is clad in a green garment with intricate golden patterns, his body language recoiling in shock or fear as his gaze fixes on the woman. His face, marked by exaggerated features, conveys a mixture of astonishment and dismay. The painting as a whole could be interpreted as a playful yet poignant commentary on themes of reveal and concealment, power dynamics between genders, or a critique of societal norms and expectations.

Gerda Marie Fredrikke Wegener (15 March 1886 – 28 July 1940) was a Danish illustrator and painter. Wegener is known for her fashion illustrations and later her paintings that pushed the boundaries of her time concerning gender and love. These works were classified as lesbian erotica at times and many were inspired by her partner, the transgender woman Lili Elbe. Wegener employed these works in the styles of Art Nouveau and later Art Deco.
