More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Penfield, titled "Poster Calendar 1897," features an illustration evocative of the late 19th century poster art style. It showcases a figure dressed in a dark suit with a striking red hat, focused on drafting or writing on a piece of paper. The artist is probably using a pen and ink, as suggested by the small ink bottle he holds with a dropper, demonstrating a meticulous commitment to the craft.Adding life to the composition is a calico cat sitting beside the drafting paper, tail wrapped neatly around its body and back turned to us, engrossed in watching the process of the artist. A few more bottles of ink or possibly other drawing materials are arrayed next to the paper, hinting at different colors or tools used in the artwork. The colors are elegantly simple yet bold, with the reds, blacks, and earth tones setting a professional yet intimate mood. The stylized text, including the artist’s name and the title of the calendar, integrates seamlessly into the overall design, making it not just a functional piece but also an artistic one. "Published by RH Russell & Son New York" is printed at the bottom, indicating the publisher and adding an official touch to the artwork. These elements together reflect a quiet, contemplative moment in an artist's life, merging functionality with aesthetic appeal—an excellent representation of Penfield's influential art nouveau poster style.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
