More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Penfield, titled "Couple In A Carriage," depicts a stylishly dressed couple enjoying a carriage ride, drawn by a striking dappled horse. The scene is flat and graphic, typical of Penfield's style, which often reflects influences from the Art Nouveau movement. The illustration uses bold, simplified forms and a limited color palette to create a clean, modern aesthetic. The carriage is minimalistic and streamlined in design, colored in a vibrant orange that stands out against the muted brown background. The man, presumably handling the reins, is dressed in a conservative brown suit and hat, juxtaposing the woman's more vivid red jacket and white feature hat. Both display a calm demeanor, indicating a leisurely outing. The horse, a prominent feature in the image, is depicted with attention to its spotted coat and muscular build, which adds a dynamic element to the composition. Also notable is the small dog seated in the rear of the carriage—likely a terrier—with its distinct black and white fur adding a playful touch to the scene.Overall, Penfield's work showcases his ability to convey a sense of casual elegance and motion, encapsulating a refined moment of Edwardian leisure.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
