More about this artwork

Karl Wiener's captivating 1924 work, "Komposition aus ‘Pflaster und Wiese’ XXIV" invites viewers to journey into a mysteriously subtle landscape where delineations between the natural and the abstract blur. At first glance, this evocative painting could be perceived as a simplistic portrayal of a monolithic structure standing amid a vast, textured plain. The shadowy figure, reminiscent of a building or monument, rises starkly against a multi-toned backdrop that shifts soothingly between shades of purple and gray.Through Wiener’s masterful use of blurred and soft forms, the exact details of the scene remain elusive, compelling the viewer to pause and ponder. Is it a depiction of a real object overshadowed by the vastness of its surroundings, or perhaps a symbolic representation, suggesting the often overlooked beauty of everyday simplicity? The layered textural effects create a complex visual experience, where light seems to ebb and flow across the canvas, evoking sensations of movement and time’s passage. This painting, like many in Wiener's repertoire, challenges the conventions of visual representation and invites a deeply personal interpretation.

Karl Wiener was an Austrian draftsman , graphic artist and photo montage artist. Because of his political and time-critical montages of the 1930s and 1940s, he was posthumously referred to as the Austrian John Heartfield on the occasion of the major retrospective on his estate in the Wien Museum.
