More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Penfield, titled "Woman Picking Up Book," is a striking example of simplicity and elegance in illustration. It features a stylized woman, depicted somewhat abstractly, with a flowing, dynamic pose. The woman is shown bending forward gracefully to pick up a book from the ground, which is delicately illustrated with a detailed cover, suggesting it might be an ornate or important volume. She holds onto what appears to be a rope or cord, possibly a part of a pull for a window shade or perhaps a decorative element, which leads upwards out of the frame, adding a sense of movement and curiosity about the unseen. She wears a large, bright red hat, shaped like a crown, that starkly contrasts with her muted brown and lavender outfit, giving her a touch of flair and drawing attention to her action and her delicate facial features. The background is minimal but features wavy, green tonal lines that perhaps suggest a carpet or decorative floor, adding a subtle depth to the setting without overwhelming the central figure.Penfield employs clean lines and bold colors typical of his work, with a focus on form and posture that conveys both the elegance and the everyday nature of the scene. The overall effect is both modern and timeless, with an air of gentle charm and quietude.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
