More about this artwork

"Hampton Court Green" by Camille Pissarro is a beaming example of the Impressionist style for which he is celebrated. This painting depicts a serene, sunlit scene at Hampton Court, showcasing Pissarro's mastery in capturing the vibrancy of outdoor settings.Central to the painting is a lush green field under a vast sky pockmarked with fluffy white clouds, indicative of a bright day. The landscape is dotted with groups of people, possibly families or friends, leisurely engaged in what appears to be a game of cricket, a common pastime in such idyllic settings.Towards the background, a row of quaint houses forms a charming horizon line. These buildings, adorned with rich, earthy tones and nestled under the shadow of tall, dense trees, add a rustic charm to the scene. The brushstrokes are quick and textured, a hallmark of Pissarro's technique, which imbues the scene with a dynamic, almost trembling energy, as if it's a moment captured in passing.Overall, the painting is a tranquil yet joyous depiction of a day at Hampton Court, encapsulating the essence of a leisurely outing in the English countryside during the late 19th century. Through his impressionistic approach, Pissarro not only captures the visual beauty of the scene but also evokes the pleasant, relaxed atmosphere that must have pervaded the air.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
