More about this artwork

Dive into a calming pause with Childe Hassam’s enchanting watercolor masterpiece, "Noon above Newburgh," painted in 1916. This delicate painting showcases Hassam’s impeccable skill and love for the ethereal aspects of nature, using subtle yet vibrant hues to bring a serene midday scene to life. The artwork presents a tranquil view over the waters, possibly the Hudson River, with Newburgh in the background shaped under the gentle lap of soft, diffuse light. The river surface is animated with an array of carefully blended strokes and speckles of blues, greens, and hints of purple, reflecting the sky’s open canvas. Mountains rise softly in the distance, their rounded tops fading into a haze of lilac and muted blues, which suggests the warmth of the noon sun veiled by light swathes of clouds.Above, the sky is a masterpiece of texture and color. Hassam employs a palette of pale blues, whites, and grays that imbue the scene with a sense of boundless space and airy openness, inviting the viewer to absorb the tranquil atmosphere of a perfect midday moment captured above Newburgh. His signature at the bottom left corner is a humble reminder of his presence within this serene landscape. In this painting, Hassam not only captures a specific locale but also universal moments of peaceful reflection. "Noon above Newburgh" invites viewers to step away from the hustle of daily life into a timeless instance where nature's quiet beauty reigns supreme.
