More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Penfield, titled "Athlete," portrays a robust and muscular man standing against a plain background. The subject is depicted in a frontal, bold pose, his body filling most of the canvas, suggesting a sense of power and presence. He wears a dark, form-fitting long-sleeve top and light-colored padded pants, typical attire for a football player of the early 20th century, which helps to convey his athletic identity.Penfield's use of solid, unmodulated colors and clean outlines are reflective of his background in poster design, emphasizing simplicity and visual impact. The athlete's facial expression is serious and focused, with sharply defined features that further accentuate his determination and physical strength. In the bottom right corner, the word "GUARD" is inscribed along with a monogram "CP," likely indications of Penfield’s signature style and branding. These elements suggest that the figure might specifically be a guard, a position in American football, underscoring his role in protecting his team on the field. This portrayal not only captures the physical attributes of an athlete but also carries a narrative of resilience, discipline, and the stoic spirit of sportsmanship.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
