More about this artwork

This painting by Edward Penfield, titled "Vintage Christmas 1894," captures a unique and stylistic depiction of Santa Claus. The artwork is characterized by its bold and simplified color scheme, primarily using shades of orange, black, and white. Santa Claus is portrayed with a loving and gentle expression, looking off to the side, which instills a sense of calm and kindness. He's dressed in a traditional hooded cloak that radiates a vibrant orange, contrasting strikingly against the black and white background. The background features an abstracted wintry landscape, possibly with snowy hills and bare trees, rendered mostly in dark tones. This gives a graphic and almost modern feel to the piece, despite its 19th-century origin. The use of large areas of untextured color and the strong outlines are reminiscent of poster art, a style that Penfield was known for and helped pioneer. The artwork communicates a jolly, serene, and somewhat mysterious interpretation of Santa Claus, resonating with the themes of joy and secrecy often associated with the holiday season. The expression and posture of Santa, along with the stark, stylish use of color and form, generate a distinctive and memorable image that celebrates Christmas in a timeless fashion.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion.
