More about this artwork

The painting "Stevenson Memorial" by Abbott Handerson Thayer is a deeply evocative piece that uses symbolic and allegorical elements to commemorate the life of the writer Robert Louis Stevenson. The composition predominantly features an angelic figure, arrayed in white and set against a dark background, enhancing the sense of otherworldliness and sanctity associated with such ethereal beings. The angel is seated, with broad, majestic wings spread out behind her. She gazes solemnly and directly out towards the viewer, creating an intimate and profound connection. Her halo and the ethereal glow around her suggest purity and divinity. She holds her hands gently clasped together, resting them on her lap, which adds to her serene and contemplative demeanor. In the background, the word "Vaea" is inscribed on a dark tombstone-like structure, referring to Mount Vaea in Samoa, where Robert Louis Stevenson was buried. This ties the painting directly to Stevenson himself, serving as a memorial to his life and works. The palm tree subtly visible near the tombstone further emphasizes the tropical setting of Stevenson's final resting place.Overall, Thayer uses his skillful technique in "Stevenson Memorial" to weave an atmospheric tribute that resonates with themes of reverence, remembrance, and spiritual grace, honoring the literary legacy of Stevenson through the solemn and sanctified imagery of an angel.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
