More about this artwork

The painting "Male Wood Duck In A Forest Pool, Study For Book Concealing Coloration In The Animal Kingdom" by Abbott Handerson Thayer presents a vivid and almost mystical depiction of a male wood duck amidst a tranquil forest pool setting. The duck is positioned centrally, floating on the water that's depicted with dark, reflective tones, enhancing a mysterious, serene atmosphere. Around the duck, the pool is dotted with water lilies, both on the surface and submerged, adding to the scene’s feeling of depth and naturalism.Thayer's use of color and light is significant; while the duck displays rich, contrasting hues—vivid whites, deep browns, and striking blacks—a majority of the surrounding environment is rendered in darker, more subdued greens and blues, effectively camouflaged. This represents Thayer's interest in natural camouflage, a recurring theme in his work, making the duck’s vibrant splashes of color stand out amidst the dark forestry and reflective water that blend seamlessly into the shadowy background.Above the serene water and duck, the background foliage is loosely painted, with white and muted greens indicating light filtering through the trees.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
