More about this artwork

The painting titled "Self-Portrait" by Abbott Handerson Thayer presents a compelling image of the artist himself. The work is executed with a robust and expressive brushwork, indicative of Thayer's mastery in handling paint. The artist's face is depicted with an intense and penetrating gaze that directly engages the viewer. His head is bald, and his skin tones vary subtly, suggesting a natural play of light and shadow. The background and Thayer's clothing are rendered with loose, vigorous strokes of greens, blacks, and earthy tones, blending him somewhat into the background of dense foliage, which could be indicative of his interest in natural camouflage—a concept he explored in his paintings and writings. This merging with the natural background might also symbolize the artist's deep connection and affinity with nature. The overall atmosphere of the portrait is slightly somber yet deeply introspective, reflecting perhaps the artist's solemn contemplation of his own existence and creative presence. Through this self-portrait, Thayer not only captures his physical likeness but also conveys a mood and psychological depth that invites viewers to reflect on the artist’s internal landscape.

Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) was an American artist, naturalist and teacher. He grew up in a wealthy Boston family and was a leader of the NY art world, selling portraits and allegorical figures to European Renaissance collectors. His art changed drastically when his wife died, when he moved to a colony of artists settled in Dublin, New Hampshire. He painted landscapes, delicate flowers, and idealistic paintings of women as angels and madonnas.
